The picking that happens during a film, a long call, or an hour of scrolling usually isn't stress wearing a disguise. It runs on something different: not enough going on.
That difference matters more than it sounds, because most advice about picking is written for the distressed version. Breathe. Notice the feeling. Work out what's underneath it. If your worst evenings are the ones where nothing whatsoever is wrong, none of that has anywhere to land, because there's no feeling underneath to find.
Understimulation is a driver in its own right. It has its own evidence, its own mode of picking, and its own set of fixes. And the fix is not to stop watching TV.
Understimulation isn't the same thing as rest
The distinction sounds like hair-splitting until you see it tested.
A group at the University of Montreal ran 24 adults with a history of body-focused repetitive behaviors and 23 people without through a set of experimental conditions designed to produce different states: stress, relaxation, and boredom with frustration. Boredom was induced in the least sophisticated way available, by leaving people alone in a room for six minutes.
Sitting still, doing nothing demanding, physically calm. That describes the relaxation condition and the boredom condition equally well. Only one of them raised the urge.
So the risky ingredient in your evening isn't rest, and it isn't the sofa. It's the gap between how much attention something asks of you and how much you have spare. Rest closes that gap. Boredom widens it.
That's the plainest explanation of why picking works in this window. It's always available, it costs nothing to start, and it delivers something you can see and feel within seconds.
The mode you're in when it happens
Clinicians split picking into two styles, and they behave differently enough that it's worth knowing which one your evenings are running.
Focused picking is deliberate. You go to it, often at a mirror, usually with a specific spot in mind. Automatic picking happens outside awareness while you're doing something else, and the standard examples written into the questionnaire that measures it are reading and watching TV.
Most people do both. The proportions shift by situation, which is the useful part.
The clearest picture of that comes from a 2024 study that had 57 adults with skin picking disorder answer smartphone prompts seven times a day for ten days, recording episodes as they happened rather than from memory. Across 1,467 episodes, roughly 55% were focused and 45% automatic. The self-reported triggers differed by style in the direction you'd expect: visual and tactile cues and a conscious desire to pick were rated higher for focused episodes, while boredom and concentration problems were rated higher for automatic ones.
Those trigger differences were statistically reliable but modest in size, so this is a picture of tendencies rather than two separate conditions. What's striking is something else in the same data. Episodes were short, with nearly 44% lasting around ten minutes, and they were spread fairly evenly through the day rather than clustered at one dramatic time.
The practical consequence of the automatic mode is that you find out afterwards. The evidence arrives at your fingertips, or in the bathroom mirror the next morning, and by then the episode has been over for a while. Which makes most of the standard instruction set structurally unusable here. Notice the urge, pause before acting, sit with the feeling. There was no noticing available to do.
Why passive screen time is such a reliable setting
Plenty of activities are low-demand. Screen time is the one that comes up again and again, and it's worth being specific about why, because the details are what you end up changing.

It takes your eyes and ears and leaves your hands unassigned. Reading occupies a hand. Cooking occupies both. Driving occupies both. A screen occupies neither, which is a fairly unusual property for an activity to have.
It holds you in one position for a long block. Most episodes need an uninterrupted stretch, and an episode of television is designed to supply exactly that.
Nobody's watching. Or if someone's in the room, they're watching the screen. Picking stops the instant it's observed, which tells you how much of the daytime version is being suppressed by an audience rather than by resolve.
There's no natural end. A conversation ends. A task ends. Autoplay doesn't.
The demand varies, and that's the part people miss. Something that genuinely grips you is not the high-risk item. The risk sits with the show you've already seen, the second episode of the evening, the thing playing while you also half-read your phone. That's where the gap opens.

If your attention runs short on unstimulating input generally, this whole window gets longer and more frequent, which is a large part of why picking and ADHD overlap as much as they do.
Why "just stop" fails for something you never started
"Just stop" assumes there was a decision point. Deliberate picking has one, even when it's very hard to use. The automatic kind doesn't have one at all. The sequence starts, runs and ends without passing through the part of you that makes decisions.
Which means resolve keeps getting applied at the wrong moment. You can't decide at 9:40 to stop something that started at 9:20 and finished at 9:30 without your knowledge. The only decision that has anywhere to land is one made before the window opens.
This is also why the shame that follows is unearned in a fairly technical sense. Beating yourself up about the last hour treats it as a choice you made badly, when the more accurate description is a set of conditions you sat down inside without altering any of them. That isn't an excuse. It's a redirect, and a useful one, because the conditions are editable in a way the willpower isn't.
Give your hands a job for the length of the activity
The instinct is to delete the activity. Stop watching TV, stop scrolling, take up a hobby. It rarely lasts a week, and it isn't necessary, because it removes one of the few genuinely restorative hours of the day to solve a problem that lives in your hands.
The narrower version works better. For the whole duration of the passive activity, your hands need something assigned to them. A handful of details decide whether that actually happens.

Cue it to the activity, not to the urge. This is the difference between advice that works here and advice that doesn't. Habit reversal training teaches a competing response you deploy when you notice an urge, and it's the strongest-evidenced behavioral treatment available. It also assumes you notice. In automatic mode you don't, so the cue has to move: the object comes out when the show starts, not when the urge arrives. Press play, pick it up. Including on the evenings you're certain you won't need it.
Choose the object for the sensation, not for how sensible it looks. A stress ball doesn't feel anything like picking. Whatever your fingers are actually hunting for, an edge to get under, a texture to roam over, something that comes away, is what the substitute has to deliver. Keep one where the activity happens. Not one you own. One per sofa, one per desk, one by the bed. The failure is always the same and it's always geographical.
Use both hands. A great deal of this runs on one idle hand while the other holds a phone. Two hands on the phone, or the phone down and both hands on the object.
Put the barriers on before you sit down. Patches, thin gloves, long sleeves, a layer of ointment on the areas you go for. At the start of the evening while you still care about the plan, not at eleven at night when you don't.
Raise the demand slightly instead of removing the activity. If background content is where it happens, make the content less background. Subtitles on. Something you haven't seen. One screen at a time rather than a show plus a phone. Fold the laundry through the second episode. The goal isn't productivity, it's closing the gap.
Give it about two weeks, and judge it on episode count rather than on whether you feel different, because you won't feel different. What you're looking for is boring and specific, and it's almost always one or two activity blocks doing most of the damage: everything during the after-dinner stretch and nothing during the morning one, or every long call and no films at all. The evening window has its own set of moving parts if that's where yours lands.
That's the thing worth logging. Not only that you picked, but what was playing and whether you were fully watching it.

Practically, the difference shows up in what works: distress-driven picking responds to emotional and cognitive work, and boredom-driven picking responds to changing what your hands and attention are doing.
Probably. Understimulation isn't the same as consciously feeling bored, and most people describe these evenings as relaxed rather than boring. The more reliable test isn't your mood, it's the activity: were your hands unassigned, and was the thing you were watching holding all of your attention or only part of it?
No, and people who try it generally last a few days. You'd be removing a restful part of your day to solve something that lives in your hands. Occupying the hands for the duration of the activity gets you most of the benefit and costs you nothing you wanted to keep.
Two usual reasons. The object doesn't match what your fingers are actually chasing, so a smooth or squishy thing gets held for a minute and abandoned. Or it isn't reachable in the moment, because you own one and it's in another room. There's a third that matters specifically here: if you only pick it up when you notice an urge, it will never get used in automatic mode. Bind it to the activity starting instead.
Not on its own. Plenty of people without ADHD pick automatically during low-stimulation activities. The two do overlap substantially, though, and if unstimulating input reliably sends your attention elsewhere, the low-stimulation window in your day is probably both longer and more frequent than average. That raises your exposure rather than changing the mechanism.
About two weeks of consistent setup, judged on how many episodes happen rather than on how you feel. Feeling different isn't part of it. What usually changes first is the length of episodes rather than their number, which is easy to miss unless you're writing something down.
